Gigi Yellow Chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum 'Gigi Yellow')
kris-AN-theh-mum 'Gigi Yellow'

Deciduous Perennial (usually grown as an annual near you) Mounded in the Asteraceae Family
Gigi Yellow brings bold double yellow blooms and fragrant ferny foliage to a tidy, mounded fall mum - the sunny finish to the Gigi color series.

Chrysanthemum 'Gigi Yellow' (patented as 'Syngigi Yel', USPP22,514, Mark A. Smith for Syngenta) is a compact, mounded garden mum with small, bold yellow double flowers set against dense, dark green, ferny foliage. It is a natural whole-plant mutation of 'Yogigi Snow' (USPP21,783) - itself a sport of 'Yogigi White' (USPP20,435), which traces back to the base cultivar 'Yogigi' - making Gigi Yellow a third-generation sport within this Syngenta breeding line. Flowers open mid-September and hold for roughly four weeks, finishing out the Gigi series' color range alongside its coral, dark pink, gold, orange, and snow-white siblings.

Pros

  • Bold, bright yellow double blooms stand out in the fall border
  • Fragrant, ferny dark green foliage adds interest even before bloom
  • Compact, mounded habit needs little staking or pinching
  • Reliable mid-September bloom timed for peak Chicago fall color

Cons

  • Short, roughly 4-week bloom window compared to season-long bedding annuals
  • No confirmed US hardiness beyond Zone 3a-9b for reliable perennial return
  • Dense double flowers can mat and hold moisture after heavy rain
Highlights

Third-generation sport of the base 'Yogigi' cultivar, via 'Yogigi White' and then 'Yogigi Snow' - the most-removed sport discovered yet in this lineage. Small double flowers (about 4cm across) carried in large numbers (46-50 inflorescences per plant) on a dense, compact, mounded plant only about 10-14cm tall with inflorescence.

Field-Grown vs. Greenhouse-Grown Plants

Plants which are well-adapted to our local climate are most often field-grown (outside). Field-grown plants are generally cheaper and have the advantage of already somewhat acclimated to our cold winters, but that means they’re not artificially far along in the spring and tend to bloom at the normal time in our area.

Spring annuals and tender perennials are typically grown in Greenhouses so they can be ready and luxurious exactly when customers want them. Some perennials are also “forced” into early bloom in greenhouses. In May, there can be a very big difference between field-grown and greenhouse-grown plants of the same type. The latter typically look good right away (so they’re a great choice where that’s important), but we typically pay a premium for it.
