Jacqueline Pink Chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum 'Jacqueline Pink')
kris-AN-theh-mum 'Jacqueline Pink'

Deciduous Perennial (usually grown as an annual near you) Mounded in the Asteraceae Family
Jacqueline Pink pairs lavender-pink double blooms with fragrant, dark ferny foliage on a tidy, mounded fall mum.

Chrysanthemum 'Jacqueline Pink' (patented as 'Synjac Pinka', USPP22,552, Mark A. Smith for Syngenta) is a compact, mounded garden mum with lavender-pink double flowers and yellow centers over fragrant, dark ferny foliage. It is a natural whole-plant mutation of the base cultivar 'Yojacqueline' (USPP18,927), discovered in Alva, Florida in November 2006 - the same Syngenta/Mark A. Smith Jacqueline breeding line as siblings 'Jacqueline Orange Fusion' and 'Jacqueline Yellow' (the latter with no confirmed patent). Flowers open mid-September and last three to four weeks per bloom.

Pros

  • Lavender-pink double blooms with yellow centers stand out in fall
  • Fragrant, dark ferny foliage adds interest before and after bloom
  • Compact, mounded habit needs little staking or pinching
  • Reliable mid-September bloom timed for Chicago fall color

Cons

  • Short, roughly 3-4 week bloom window per flower
  • Single-sourced Zone 5 minimum, no independently confirmed upper bound
  • Dense double flowers can mat and hold moisture after heavy rain
Highlights

Fourth confirmed sport mapped in the Jacqueline/Yojacqueline breeding line this batch, alongside Orange Fusion, Peach Fusion, and Pearl (the latter two not yet in this database). Lavender-pink, double flowers (about 60 ray florets) on a compact plant only 12-17.5cm tall with inflorescence.

Field-Grown vs. Greenhouse-Grown Plants

Plants which are well-adapted to our local climate are most often field-grown (outside). Field-grown plants are generally cheaper and have the advantage of already somewhat acclimated to our cold winters, but that means they’re not artificially far along in the spring and tend to bloom at the normal time in our area.

Spring annuals and tender perennials are typically grown in Greenhouses so they can be ready and luxurious exactly when customers want them. Some perennials are also “forced” into early bloom in greenhouses. In May, there can be a very big difference between field-grown and greenhouse-grown plants of the same type. The latter typically look good right away (so they’re a great choice where that’s important), but we typically pay a premium for it.
