Jacqueline Yellow Mum (Chrysanthemum 'Jacqueline Yellow')
kris-AN-theh-mum 'Jacqueline Yellow'

Deciduous Perennial (usually grown as an annual near you) in the Asteraceae Family
Jacqueline Yellow brings solid, sunny yellow double blooms to a tidy, compact fall mum, part of the Jacqueline breeding series.

Chrysanthemum 'Jacqueline Yellow' is a compact garden mum with solid yellow double flowers and green, ferny foliage. It belongs to the Jacqueline/Yojacqueline breeding series bred by Mark A. Smith for Syngenta - the same lineage as sibling 'Jacqueline Orange Fusion' (USPP22,657) and the base cultivar 'Yojacqueline' (USPP18,927, itself lavender-flowered). Unlike its confirmed-patented siblings ('Jacqueline Orange Fusion', 'Jacqueline Peach Fusion', 'Jacqueline Pink', 'Jacqueline Pearl' all carry granted Synjac-denominated patents), no granted US plant patent could be found for this specific yellow-flowered sport despite a real search effort; one retail source (Hoffie Nursery) lists its patent status as PPAF (patent applied for, not yet granted). Blooms mid-September into October.

Pros

  • Clean, solid yellow double blooms stand out in the fall border
  • Compact, uniform habit needs little staking or pinching
  • Reliable September-to-October bloom timed for Chicago fall color
  • Attracts butterflies to the late-season garden

Cons

  • No confirmed US plant patent - one retail source lists it as patent-pending (PPAF)
  • Sources disagree notably on mature size, so size here is left unconfirmed
  • Short, concentrated bloom window compared to season-long bedding annuals
Highlights

The one color in the Jacqueline series found without a confirmed granted US patent so far - an anomaly similar to 'Gigi Orange' in the parallel Gigi series. Clean, solid yellow double flowers on a compact, uniform plant.

Field-Grown vs. Greenhouse-Grown Plants

Plants which are well-adapted to our local climate are most often field-grown (outside). Field-grown plants are generally cheaper and have the advantage of already somewhat acclimated to our cold winters, but that means they’re not artificially far along in the spring and tend to bloom at the normal time in our area.

Spring annuals and tender perennials are typically grown in Greenhouses so they can be ready and luxurious exactly when customers want them. Some perennials are also “forced” into early bloom in greenhouses. In May, there can be a very big difference between field-grown and greenhouse-grown plants of the same type. The latter typically look good right away (so they’re a great choice where that’s important), but we typically pay a premium for it.

We order from a rotating cast of the best nurseries in the Great Lakes region. It looks like we've offered this plant in the past, but the nurseries we're working with this week don't appear to have it in stock at the moment.

Our goal is to bring as many plants together under "one roof" as possible, so we'll try hard to make it available again in the future!
