Lucy Bronze Bicolor Mum (Chrysanthemum 'Lucy Bronze Bicolor')
kris-AN-theh-mum 'Lucy Bronze BY-kul-or

Deciduous Perennial (usually grown as an annual near you) Rounded, Mounded in the Asteraceae Family
A bronze bicolor mum: red petals tipped yellow, deepening in color as fall nights turn cool.
Chrysanthemum 'Lucy Bronze Bicolor' is a fall garden mum grown for its two-toned blooms: spooned red petals tipped in yellow that deepen toward bronze as nights turn cool. It forms a tidy, rounded mound of green foliage and blooms heavily from September into October, giving dependable late-season color in containers, beds, and borders. Like most garden mums, it is botanically a perennial but is typically grown and sold here as fall annual color.

Pros

  • Striking red-and-yellow bicolor blooms that deepen with cooler weather
  • Reliable, heavy fall bloom from September into October
  • Compact, rounded habit suits containers and mixed beds
  • Adds late-season color and draws pollinators when little else is blooming

Cons

  • Usually grown and sold as a fall annual here rather than overwintered
  • Foliage offers little interest once blooms fade
  • May need pinching earlier in the season for a fuller shape
This plant may be mostly winter-hardy outdoors where you live, but it may need protection to survive extreme weather.
Highlights
  • Two-toned red-and-yellow "bicolor" flowers that deepen to bronze tones as the season cools
  • A color-break sport in the extended 'Yolucy' mum breeding line
  • Full sun; heavy, reliable fall bloomer

Field-Grown vs. Greenhouse-Grown Plants

Plants which are well-adapted to our local climate are most often field-grown (outside). Field-grown plants are generally cheaper and have the advantage of already somewhat acclimated to our cold winters, but that means they’re not artificially far along in the spring and tend to bloom at the normal time in our area.

Spring annuals and tender perennials are typically grown in Greenhouses so they can be ready and luxurious exactly when customers want them. Some perennials are also “forced” into early bloom in greenhouses. In May, there can be a very big difference between field-grown and greenhouse-grown plants of the same type. The latter typically look good right away (so they’re a great choice where that’s important), but we typically pay a premium for it.

Our goal is to bring as many plants together under "one roof" as possible, so we'll try hard to make it available again in the future!
