Hot Spot Bronze Chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum 'Hot Spot Bronze')
kris-AN-theh-mum 'Hot Spot Bronze'

Deciduous Perennial (usually grown as an annual near you) Mounded in the Asteraceae Family
Hot Spot Bronze pairs warm orange-red centers with golden outer petals on a dense, mounded mum built for a long fall show.

Chrysanthemum 'Hot Spot Bronze' is a densely mounding garden mum with two-tone flowers - warm orange-red centers surrounded by golden, butterscotch-colored outer petals - over dark green foliage. It blooms in late summer into fall, typically September through October, and dies back to the ground each year as an herbaceous perennial. No breeder or US plant patent could be confirmed for this cultivar name despite a real search effort across Google Patents and retail sources; sizing and care here are sourced to this specific cultivar via Conservation Garden Park's plant database, which independently matches the figures already on this record.

Pros

  • Two-tone orange-red and golden blooms stand out in fall displays
  • Dense, mounded habit with dark green foliage all season
  • Deadheading promotes a strong rebloom through fall
  • Low-maintenance, widely adaptable from Zone 6 to 11

Cons

  • Dies back to the ground each fall, needing cleanup of spent foliage
  • Can turn leggy by midsummer without a cutback
  • Short, concentrated September-October bloom window
This plant may be mostly winter-hardy outdoors where you live, but it may need protection to survive extreme weather.
Highlights

Two-tone orange-red and golden-butterscotch double flowers are an unusually warm color combination for a fall mum. Hardy across an unusually wide range (Zone 6-11 per Conservation Garden Park), making it broadly adaptable.

Field-Grown vs. Greenhouse-Grown Plants

Plants which are well-adapted to our local climate are most often field-grown (outside). Field-grown plants are generally cheaper and have the advantage of already somewhat acclimated to our cold winters, but that means they’re not artificially far along in the spring and tend to bloom at the normal time in our area.

Spring annuals and tender perennials are typically grown in Greenhouses so they can be ready and luxurious exactly when customers want them. Some perennials are also “forced” into early bloom in greenhouses. In May, there can be a very big difference between field-grown and greenhouse-grown plants of the same type. The latter typically look good right away (so they’re a great choice where that’s important), but we typically pay a premium for it.

No Pricing or Availability Right Now

We order from a rotating cast of the best nurseries in the Great Lakes region. It looks like we've offered this plant in the past, but the nurseries we're working with this week don't appear to have it in stock at the moment.

Our goal is to bring as many plants together under "one roof" as possible, so we'll try hard to make it available again in the future!
